There are fears over the health of former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, as he is said to be seriously ill.

But the Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the party, Tunji Shelle, dismissed the rumoured illness in an interview yesterday.

George has been out of the country for about two months, deepening fears that all may not be well with his health.

This position was confirmed by a close ally of the politician, who pleaded not to be named, saying the rumour might not be far from the truth.

According to him, though George had been in England in the early part of his trip abroad, he is said to be in Germany, receiving treatment at the moment.

He said though the nature of George’s illness remained under wraps, it might not be unconnected with his jail term.

George, alongside some big wigs of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), was sent to jail for contract splitting when he was the chairman.

The source said given the state of Nigerian prisons, it wouldn’t be out of place if George’s health had deteriorated while he was serving his term.

Reacting to the story yesterday, Shelle said it was a tissue of lies, as he spoke with George Monday evening.

Said he: “I spoke with him yesterday. Quote me. He is hale and hearty. He will be back very soon.”

According to him, Lagos PDP members should keep the flag flying, as the story was a mere distraction.
